If you run NetSuite and need carbon accounting, most of the data is already in your ledger, so the real question is how a carbon tool connects to it. There are two honest answers, and they suit different teams.
For the accounting method itself, turning ERP spend into emissions, see carbon accounting for NetSuite users. This piece is narrower: it is about the connection, and the choice between keeping carbon inside NetSuite or reading it out into a dedicated analyst.
Two ways to connect
A carbon tool can either live inside NetSuite or sit alongside it. A native SuiteApp, one that is Built for NetSuite, installs into your account and keeps its carbon data there. An external connector reads your NetSuite data over the API and keeps the carbon data in its own platform. Both are legitimate, and the right one depends on where you want your carbon data to live.
A native SuiteApp, inside your ERP
A Built-for-NetSuite app installs into your account and stores its carbon data as custom records in NetSuite. The appeal is that your carbon accounting sits in the same system as your finances, as a single source of truth, and no external party holds the data. The tradeoffs are that it lives only in NetSuite, so your carbon history is tied to the ERP if you ever move off it, and like any SuiteApp it adds objects to your instance and is an application to deploy and maintain. If your organisation is committed to NetSuite and wants everything in one place, this approach fits well.
An external read-only connector, alongside it
An external connector reads your procurement and financial data over NetSuite's API and keeps the carbon data in the carbon platform. When it is read-only, nothing is installed or changed in your NetSuite account, and the tool cannot create, edit or delete anything, which often clears a security review quickly. It also means the same tool can take data from other systems later, not just NetSuite. The tradeoff is that your carbon data lives outside NetSuite, so you are trusting an external platform to hold it, though the data stays yours to export and every figure links back to its NetSuite source. This approach fits teams that would rather not touch their ERP, expect to bring in data from more than one system, or want a dedicated analyst that shows its working on every number.
The questions that matter either way
The architecture decides where your data lives, but accuracy and assurance come down to a few questions worth asking any vendor, native or external.
The questions a finance leader asks
- Coverage: can it show me what is still missing, like an entity or category with no data yet, so I know I have caught everything?
- Double-counting: when I have both spend and activity for the same source, does it reconcile them, or add them together?
- Activity data: can it read the figure off the invoice PDF attached to a transaction, so nobody clicks into hundreds of bills by hand?
- Granularity: can I see emissions by entity and region, not just a single group total?
- Traceability: does every number trace back to the NetSuite transaction behind it, so it survives assurance?
- Emission factors: how current are they, and are up-to-date ones an extra licence?
Which one fits you
Choose a native SuiteApp if you want your carbon data to live inside NetSuite as a single source of truth, you are committed to NetSuite, and you are comfortable installing an app into your account. Choose an external read-only connector if you would rather not change anything in NetSuite, or you expect to bring in data from other systems as well. Both can produce an audit-ready footprint, and the difference is mostly where the data lives.
